EMS - Eat More Spaghetti
If you have trouble finding words fast in a dictionary, then eat more spaghetti...NO...don't eat spaghetti, EMS is a way that will help you, but first add A and Z, to get A - E - M - S - Z.
A E M S Z will help you because they are the four sections of a dictionary.
They are A to E , E to M, M to S and S to Z.
So, if you are looking up a word that starts with N for example, you will know that you will find it in the third section of the dictionary, from M to S.
These pictures will show you the different parts of the dictionary
Here is another activity that will help you practice -
1 - You could write the alphabet down the side of the page and then find a word for each letter and the meaning.
2 - Get your teacher or someone at home to say out aloud a letter and you have to see how quickly you can find it in the dictionary.
3 - Target Practice is when someone calls out a letter and you have to try an open up the dictionary at that letter. If you get it, you get a bulls eye, if you are within one letter, it is one off, and if you miss, you get a miss.
- Follow this link to get a bulls eye Target Practice Sheet that you can print one out.
