Eat Well SA Healthy Eating Guidelines for SA School and Preschools (Healthy Eating Guidelines)

The Eat Well SA Healthy Eating Guidelines for SA School and Preschools (Healthy Eating Guidelines) promote a whole school approach to learning, health and wellbeing for children and students in relation to food and nutrition.

These guidelines reflect and support a number of Commonwealth and state policies and were issued to all schools and preschools in South Australia in 2004, providing a framework for planning strategies to ensure children and students learn about, experience and practise healthy eating. The Healthy Eating Guidelines were re-released to schools and preschools as part of the Right Bite resource pack in 2008.

The guidelines provide a framework for schools and preschools to develop their own Healthy Eating Policy through six areas of practice:

  1. Curriculum
  2. The learning environment
  3. Food supply (this includes canteens and food services)
  4. Food safety
  5. Food related health support planning
  6. Working with families, health services and industry.

The guidelines aim to support healthy environments in schools and preschools, increase fruit and vegetable consumption, provide recommendations for healthy eating, promote healthy weight and address food related issues for priority groups.

To help assist teachers with linking the Healthy Eating Guidelines to classroom curriculum, SACSA Curriculum mapping for the strand Health of individuals and communities can be found on pages 28-31 of the Healthy Eating Guidelines.
