South Australian organisations may undertake work in other states, and organisations based in other states may conduct business in South Australia.
There may be factors for such organisations to consider in order to ensure the provision of a child safe environment.
The child safe environments provisions of the Children’s Protection Act 1993 may apply to interstate organisations providing a service to children in South Australia.
The child safe environments page explains which organisations must establish a child safe environment, including developing child safe environment policies and procedures.
The requirements include:
- developing a child safe policy and code of conduct
- developing a risk management strategy
- complying with mandatory notification procedures
- lodging a child safe environments compliance statement
- conducting relevant history assessments.
National organisations hosting events in South Australia should check with their South Australian branches to find out what the state branch’s child safe environment policies are.
In many cases the national organisation may agree to apply the policies of the South Australian branch in order to meet their obligations.
Prior to the event, the state or national organisation must notify Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) in writing that the South Australian branch’s policies have been adopted.
When providing a service for children interstate, South Australian organisations must be aware of the requirements of the relevant state or territory:
