Additional call for Aboriginal STEM Scholarship applicants

Aboriginal students are being strongly encouraged to apply for one of five STEM Scholarships offered in the latest round, which opened on Friday 19 January 2018.

The $1 million STEM Scholarship fund was created to support 110 high school students from under-represented groups to continue their STEM education and complete Year 12.

The scholarship grants offered range from $7500 to $10,000 and will cover costs associated with tutors, laptops, textbooks and excursions or can be used for strategies or services that directly support the student in their chosen STEM subjects.

Aboriginal student Rachel Greenwood from Seaview High School was a scholarship recipient from the previous round and is eager to expand her knowledge and investigate the opportunities that a STEM career can offer. The STEM Scholarship will empower this quiet achiever with the confidence to overcome any obstacles.

Applications are being sought from Aboriginal students who demonstrate potential and achievement in STEM subjects and are committed to completing SACE Stage 1 STEM subjects in 2018 and SACE Stage 2 STEM subjects in 2019.

Students must be enrolled in a South Australian government school, hold a school card, be willing to participate in mentoring programs and other STEM career awareness activities and intend to pursue at least one SACE Stage 2 STEM subjects (specialist mathematics, math methods, chemistry or physics) to be eligible to apply.

Background

Applications will be assessed by a panel including DECD Secondary Learning Improvement project officers and Aboriginal community representatives.

The STEM Scholarship program will be offered for three financial years, with this additional round as part of the 2017/2018 financial year.

STEM Scholarship grants are paid to the school, which will administer the release of money for specific purposes aligned with the student’s budget plan.
