Fire update

Thursday, November 26, 2015

School principals and preschool directors in fire-affected areas have been given authority to decide locally whether their site will open or close today.

As a result, the Department for Education and Child Development overnight has been advised of the following closures:

  • Hamley Bridge Primary School
  • Wasleys Primary School
  • Kapunda Kindergarten
  • Riverton Kindergarten

The following schools will open today but will not be running a full service:

  • Kapunda High School
  • Kapunda Primary School
  • Tarlee Primary School

Any updates will be released as information becomes available.

School bus and school taxi services in affected areas are expected to be heavily impacted.

Executive Director, Infrastructure, Ross Treadwell says schools and preschools are making direct contact with parents about closures and cancellations, where possible.

“As the fire is still ‘active’, there is a high possibility of road closures remaining in place and some routes may be inaccessible.

“All reasonable efforts have been made to contact those families affected by cancelled routes. However, it may not have been possible to contact all parents and caregivers due to phone and power losses in the area.

“Families are advised to consider alternate means of transporting their children and are urged to check the latest information on the CFS and SA Police websites before commencing any journey into the affected area.”

Mr Treadwell says the department has not received any advice to indicate that school infrastructure has been damaged as a result of the Pinery fire.

“The department acknowledges that many families will have been directly and indirectly affected by yesterday’s events, including the necessity to evacuate or relocate to a safer area.

“Families that are unable to attend school for personal or logistical reasons are asked to notify their respective schools of non-attendance in the usual manner.”

Counselling and other support services for staff and students will be deployed to affected communities today.

The DECD Parent Bushfire Hotline will be available on 1800 000 279 for information on any variations to this statement.

The Department for Education and Child Development will continue to monitor the situation today and act on the advice of the CFS.
