Governing Council Portal to help parents get involved

A new dedicated web portal gives parents the information they need to get involved in the governance and decision-making at their child’s school.

The Governing Councils Portal is a new feature of the DECD’s redesigned website which was launched recently.

The portal contains a range of easy-to-understand information on what a governing council does, how to join and what areas of school operation it oversees.

It also provides handy guides on issues such as council membership and eligibility, the different roles on the council and how the election process works.

The portal has been developed to fulfil a key recommendation contained in the Independent Review of Government School and Preschool Governance in South Australia carried out by Hon. Bronwyn Pike.

The creation of the portal is the first stage in Department’s plan to deliver a comprehensive program of parent engagement.  The next stage of the portal will be the creation of training modules on key aspects of governance to support council members participate in making decisions and confidently fulfil their roles.

The portal complements the rollout of face to face Governing Council training that is being delivered across the state to council members, school staff and interested community members.

Background

Every public school and preschool has a governing or school council.  Councils have a shared responsibility with the principal or director to make decisions on the governance of a school or preschool and work to:

  • involve the local community
  • develop and approve local policies
  • review, approve and monitor the site budget
  • set the broad direction and vision of the site
  • monitor and review the site learning plan
  • be an employing authority of some services, including out of school hours care and canteen.
