Members of the public are being encouraged to make a contribution to the Dame Roma Mitchell Trust Fund, which provides financial assistance to eligible children and young people who are or have been under guardianship.
The Dame Roma Mitchell Grants enhance quality of life through assisting in areas of personal and professional development, as well as improving their health and wellbeing.
The grants can assist in:
- Health and wellbeing: Essential household furniture, white goods and electrical appliances, health needs and driving lessons.
- Personal development: Self-development activities, social and recreational activities.
- Professional development: Computers and accessories, tertiary education fees and materials.
Through the donations, people are helping to create opportunities that contribute to the development of young people who may otherwise have limited opportunities.
The Dame Roma Mitchell Trust Fund was set up in 2003 and more than $2.5 million in grants has gone towards supporting children and young people who are or have been in care.
126 children and young people were given grants in the 2014/15 financial year, of which $119,022 was distributed to support their development, health and wellbeing.
The grant rounds are released biannually, with one closing in February and one in September.
