Initiatives engage parents

Thursday, March 9, 2017

A total of $80,000 has been given to 35 government schools and preschools to be invested into programs aimed at increasing the participation of parents in their child’s education.

The Parent Initiatives in Education grants help parents and caregivers build an understanding of their role in supporting their child’s learning, and address a range of priorities identified by parent groups and school communities.

Many of the successful applicants have identified cultural ties as a way of developing stronger connections and share perspectives to enhance learning and build positive relationships within their community, such as McLaren Vale Primary’s cultural learning program for parents and carers of Indigenous students.

Kalaya Children’s Centre will also be running a program linking Aboriginal children from the centre with elders in the community, which will build on the children’s cultural awareness and connection with their heritage.
