Christmas carols in our schools

30 August 2017

There have been a number of reports that we are considering banning Christmas carols in our schools.

To be clear, we are absolutely not banning Christmas carols in schools and preschools.

South Australian public schools are and should be secular in nature and respect the traditions of children from many cultures, but the singing of songs about very quiet nights, mangers and reindeer with red noses is not something that this department or government would ever dream of denying our kids.

Please accept this as confirmation of the department’s policy position and ongoing support for the singing of Christmas carols.

We welcome schools celebrating Christmas traditions by participating in Christmas carols or students making decorations. They form an important part of schools commemorating this festive time of year with their school communities.
