Award categories

The SA Excellence in Public Education Awards are open to anyone working in a South Australian public school, preschool or early childhood setting. 

Applications can be made for the categories of:

  • leadership
  • teaching
  • support staff
  • partnership innovation
  • lifetime achievement.

If you've been nominated for an award, or you’d like to nominate someone in the Lifetime Achievement category, you can complete the application on the awards platform.

Applications for all categories close 5pm, Monday May 9 2016.

Leadership

Up to three winners.
 
Open to any leader in a DECD school, preschool or early childhood setting (Principal, Preschool Director, Deputy Principal etc)

Winners may choose one of the following Harvard Graduate School of Education short courses.

Leadership: An Evolving Vision

For experienced principals and preschool directors in B-12 settings.

Program objectives:

  • Examine leadership styles and practices that enhance organisational performance and enable sustainable change
  • Develop skills to manage schools and districts entrepreneurially
  • Implement specific strategies for leading instruction, valuing diversity, fostering a positive school culture, and communicating effectively with a variety of constituencies
  • Learn proven techniques for enabling personal growth and for improving relationships with colleagues and staff members
  • Lead a systematic process of improving the learning, happiness, and life chances of children and young people

Application requirements:

  • Provide 2x 250-word responses to questions regarding your school environment and a significant professional challenge
  • Upload your CV/resume as a single MS Word or PDF document. Generally your CV/resume should include your current job title, professional experience and your education
  • Provide a professional referee statement of 250 words to support your application

New and Aspiring Leaders

For those with 2 years or less experience in a leadership role, in B-12 settings. 

Program objectives:

  • Assume a leadership position with a vision for success
  • Improve instruction through effective teacher supervision and evaluation
  • Foster curriculum collaboration among the faculty
  • Utilise resources and time to maximise student achievement
  • Discover ways to support all learners in your classrooms
  • Achieve community support for your school's mission

Application requirements:

  • Provide 2x 250-word responses to questions regarding the benefits of participation to your work, and the contribution you will make at the course
  • Upload your CV/resume as a single MS Word or PDF document. Generally your CV/resume should include your current job title, professional experience and your education
  • Provide a professional referee statement of 250 words

Teaching

Up to two winners each in early years teaching, Credit Union SA primary teaching, or secondary teaching categories.
 
Open to any teacher (B-12) in a DECD school, preschool or early childhood setting.

Winners will receive a professional learning activity of their choice, up to the value of $10,000, according to the proposals made in their applications.

Application requirements

  • Briefly explain your work context and how you contribute to educational attainment and/or wellbeing in your setting. (200 words)
  • Provide a detailed description of how you would spend up to $10,000 on professional learning in 2017. (250 words)
  • Use examples to demonstrate the value of your proposed professional learning and the results you expect to see on completion. (250 words)
  • Identify how your proposal aligns with the department's strategic priorities. (100 words)
  • Provide a professional referee statement to support your application. (250 words)

Support staff

Up to two winners
 
Open to any support staff member in a DECD school, preschool or early childhood setting (SSO, ECW, AEW etc).

Winners will receive a professional learning activity of their choice, up to the value of $10,000, according to the proposals made in their applications.

Application requirements

  • Briefly explain your work context and how you contribute to educational attainment and/or wellbeing in your setting. (200 words)
  • Provide a detailed description of how you would spend up to $10,000 on professional learning in 2017. (250 words)
  • Use examples to demonstrate the value of your proposed professional learning and the results you expect to see on completion. (250 words)
  • Identify how your proposal aligns with the department's strategic priorities. (100 words)
  • Provide a professional referee statement to support your application. (250 words)

Partnership innovation

Open to teams collaborating within or across ECD Partnerships on a learning activity or fact-finding mission to research best practice in other jurisdictions.

The winning team receives funding to undertake their chosen activity, up to the value of $50,000 according to the proposals made in their application.

Applicants must:
  • provide an overview of your Partnership/s, including current priorities (200 words)
  • describe your proposed activity, including timeframe, objectives and estimated costings (500 words)
  • describe the reasons for nominating your proposal, demonstrating the value of the research and the expected results (500 words)

Lifetime achievement

Open to outstanding teachers, education leaders, or school/preschool support staff members who have worked with the Department for Education and Child Development for 30 years or more.

Winners will receive a trophy and a $1,000 personal wellbeing grant. 

Nominators are to apply on the entrant's behalf.

Application requirements:

  • Nominee contact details and approximate years of service
  • Overview of the nominee's key achievements and a summary of their contribution to DECD (250 words)
  • Two professional referee statements to support the nomination (2 x 250 words).
