State and national reports and research

The following reports have been created by other organisations who have completed research and analysis on the teacher workforce at both state and national levels.

Schools Australia reports

The Schools Australia report, released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, contains annual data on the numbers of schools, students and staff for all Australian states and territories.

It also includes measures of student engagement and ratios of full-time equivalent (FTE) students to FTE teaching staff.

Data is from the National Schools Statistics Collection (NSSC).

School teacher workforce data – national reports

The Australian Government has funded the development of numerous national reports on the school teacher workforce, including:

These reports inform us of teacher workforce issues and teacher workforce planning.

Staff in Australia's schools (SiAS) reports

The staff in Australia's schools (SiAS) survey, conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), collects information from over 17,000 secondary and primary school teachers and leaders across the country.

National report on schooling in Australia

The Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority's national report on schooling in Australia gives information on annual progress towards the educational goals for young Australians announced in the December 2008 Melbourne Declaration.

Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) reports

The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) provides direction for federal, state and territory governments in promoting excellence in the profession of teaching and school leadership.

This includes:

  • implementing new teacher standards
  • developing tools to support teachers and leaders
  • analysing information specific to the teaching workforce
  • assisting workforce planners in planning for a quality and sustainable teaching workforce.

The initial teacher education data report has information about education programs, applications, students and graduates.

Department of Employment research

The Australian Government Department of Employment is responsible for national policies and programs to help Australians find and keep work in safe, fair and productive workplaces.

They also carry out research to identify skill shortages in the Australian job market.

The information can be used to assist workforce planners in planning for a quality and sustainable teaching workforce.

Public sector workforce information

The size, structure and composition of the public sector workforce changes annually.

To better understand the workforce, the Commissioner for Public Sector Employment conducts a census every June. Workforce information collected includes employment details (full-time, part-time or casual, classification etc) and workforce demographics (age, gender and diversity).

The education department is represented in these documents across all relevant acts.
