The governance arrangements outline the expectations, roles and responsibilities of everyone involved in decision making, regarding planning and service delivery in children’s centres and children and family centres.
These governance arrangements (PDF 391KB) are underpinned by guiding principles and practices and cover:
- appropriate compliance with legislative and reporting requirements
- informal advisory, planning and decision making responsibilities
- developing practices, policies and procedures to provide strategic direction
- ensuring objectives and outcomes are achieved
- risk management
- appropriate use of resources
- accountability requirements.
All centres have:
- a director or head of school early years
- early childhood teachers and educators
- community development coordinators who work in partnership with other agencies to facilitate a range of programs and services.
Some centres also have on their staff:
- family service coordinators who aim to improve outcomes for vulnerable and marginalised families
- allied health staff such as occupational therapists and speech pathologists, using primary prevention and early intervention to strengthen parenting skills and child development
- Learning Together program staff
- Child and Family Health clinic staff, including maternal health nurses.
The success of providing integrated services through centres relies on a partnership approach by interdisciplinary teams and multiple service providers when supporting children, families and the community.
The partnership process starts with developing a vision for the centre and for the way services will work together to deliver integrated programs and services.
Induction for staff delivering programs in the centre will include:
- clarification of individuals’ roles and responsibilities
- support by their employer to participate in the governance of the centre
- relevant centre meetings
- training opportunities.
