Building Better Schools is a $692 million investment by the state government to provide new and upgraded facilities at 91 schools across South Australia.
The investment will provide contemporary learning environments for students to learn the skills they need in the jobs of tomorrow. This is particularly important as the need for skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is growing.
Modern and flexible spaces for learning encourages students to be curious, use their imagination, be innovative, develop leadership skills and work well in groups, all vital skills for the jobs of the future.
Building Better Schools will help deliver the world-class education system that South Australian students deserve. The program is part of the Public Education Action Plan which outlines how we will support children and their public school to benefit South Australia’s future.
Upgrades will be tailored to the needs of each school and may include:
- removal of old relocatable or modular classrooms
- new buildings for schools with growing student numbers
- refurbishing of classrooms and buildings transforming into modern learning areas
- landscaping and upgrades of the street frontage to create a vibrant entry.
Funding allocated to a school covers all costs. This includes costs for relocating staff and students into other buildings when a building is being refurbished or demolished (this is known as decanting). It also covers:
- power upgrades
- asbestos removal
- new furniture
- new fittings
- new equipment including ICT.
Work is underway with architects and staff from corporate office having visited schools prior to the end of the 2017 school year.
Architects will finalise broad scoping plans and drawings for school’s to sign off in early 2018. After this concept plans will be developed with school leaders.
The program will be completed over 6 years and the start of construction at each school will be staggered across the program.
Businesses and local contractors are encouraged to register their interest in the program.
Because each school upgrade will be different, there are opportunities for businesses of all sizes to be involved. With upgrades planned for metropolitan and regional schools, there are many opportunities for businesses from all across South Australia to take part.
