International student assessments

International assessments are used to monitor the performance of Australian students compared with students in other countries.

Program for international student assessment (PISA)

Programme for international student assessment (PISA) enables countries to compare how their students are performing on a set of common tasks compared to students in other countries. 

Trends in international mathematics and science study (TIMSS)

Trends in international mathematics and science study (TIMSS) helps participating countries to monitor and evaluate their mathematics and science teaching and learning across time and year levels.

The assessment is conducted every 4 years by students in years 4 and 8.

Progress in international reading literacy study (PIRLS)

Progress in international reading literacy study (PIRLS) is a large-scale assessment designed to inform educational policy and practice by providing an international perspective of teaching and learning in reading literacy at year 4 level.

PIRLS is conducted every 5 years for year 4 students.
