Designing preschool outdoor learning areas

The vision and values statement (PDF 377KB) provides guidance on designing outdoor learning areas and focuses on:

  • planning for children's learning
  • respecting the environment and the natural world.

Design requirements

The preschool outdoor learning area design guide (PDF 333KB) addresses the principles, elements and objectives of an outdoor learning environment in an early childhood service and must be used when developing outdoor learning areas.

Elements are detailed in four sections:

  • features to be incorporated
  • site-specific considerations
  • features to be avoided.

This Risky Play article outlines how to balance safety with the benefits of allowing risk, and approaches to managing risks.
