Running a family day care (FDC) service is a flexible and rewarding career choice. If you are considering becoming a registered FDC educator with the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD), you should read the information for applicants (PDF 656KB).
Becoming a DECD FDC educator allows you to:
- work from home
- decide your own work hours
- care for a maximum of 4 children preschool age or under and 7 children in total, including your own children under 13 years old.
Running a business from home will affect your living space, privacy, and availability. It is important to consider the impact on your family and seek their support. Refer to what your family needs to know (PDF 656KB) for further information.
Your home will be assessed for safety and suitability for children in line with the National Quality Framework. Coordinators will provide advice about this.
Ability to run a small business
You will have to allow time and energy for planning and managing the paperwork involved in successfully running your own business. As a home-based small business owner, you might be eligible for tax concessions. To find out, contact an accountant, tax professional, or the Australian Taxation Office.
You will need a minimum Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30113) to be become a registered FDC educator.
Approved first aid certificates are required for:
- Apply First Aid
- Anaphylaxis Management
- Emergency Asthma Management
These courses can be obtained through various community organisations. It is also a mandatory part of obtaining a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
ACECQA is responsible for approving qualifications for all approved child care services.
Criminal history check
All educators and other adult members of the household are required to have a current child-related employment screening. Coordinators can provide you with the application form.
Part of the registration process for an applicant is to obtain 2 references relating to your reliability and skills when caring for other people’s children. Providers of DECD FDC in South Australia must meet specific competencies, some of which are included your ability to:
- ensure children's health and safety
- care for children
- respond to illness, accidents and emergencies
- work within a legal and ethical framework
- support the development of children in the service
- interact effectively with children
- participate in workplace safety procedures
- deliver services and activities to stimulate children’s development and enhance their leisure
- develop an understanding of children’s interests and developmental needs
- prepare nutritionally balanced food in a safe and hygienic manner
- care for babies
- work effectively with families in caring for the child.
Educators must be of good health and free of any medical conditions or dependency on any medication or substance that may affect their ability to care for children.
Educators requiring regular medication should hold a medical certificate confirming their ability to care for children.
No person who is adversely affected by drugs or alcohol shall supervise or remain in the presence of a child in care.
A medical clearance must be given by a doctor before registration as a DECD FDC educator can be considered. Forms are available from coordinators.

DECD FDC has a long history of providing high-quality care for children with additional needs. Educators are provided with support and training to meet each child's specific needs.
Experienced and qualified educators who care for children with additional needs may have more work opportunities through also working with the Respite Care program, a specialised disability service for families with children with disabilities that operates alongside DECD FDC.
