Apply for a relevant history screening - working in education

You must have a relevant history screening before commencing employment for the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD). Some volunteers also require screening. A relevant history screening can only be made with your consent.

Screening must be updated every 3 years.

Teacher applications

Teachers are screened through the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia as part of their teacher registration. No further screening is required.

Current employees and volunteer applications

If you are a current employee (other than a teacher) or volunteer you can apply through your school, preschool or business unit by:

  1. asking the site requesting officer to initiate the online screening process
  2. selecting the link to the online application which will be forwarded to your personal or work email address
  3. follow the instructions outlined in the DCSI online application process fact sheet (PDF 651KB) to complete your online application.

Current screening obtained through the Teachers Registration Board of SA is acceptable for teachers moving into corporate roles and non-teaching roles in schools and preschools.

Costs

  • The department will cover the screening cost for current permanent employees.
  • Current temporary employees will be charged  $103.40 (inc. GST).
  • Volunteer applications are subsidised by the department. Volunteers will be charged $15 (inc GST).

Prospective employee and volunteer applications

If you are a prospective employee, an employable ancillary register (EAR) applicant, or a community member seeking to volunteer but have not been placed at a DECD site, you must:

  1. email the following information to decd.hrconfidential [at] sa.gov.au to initiate your online screening request:
    • full name
    • date of birth
    • current email address
    • DECD employee ID number (if you have one)
    • details of the prospective role for which you are applying
  2. select the link to the online application which will be emailed to you
  3. follow the instructions outlined in the DCSI online application process fact sheet (PDF 651KB) to complete your online application.

Costs 

Prospective and temporary employees are required to pay for their own screening.

  • Employee $103.40 (inc. GST)
  • Volunteer $57.20 (inc GST)

Processing times

The screening normally takes around 20 business days to process.

In some cases, it may take more than 8 weeks, depending on the relevance, complexity and amount of information which requires assessment.

Applicants must consider these processing times to ensure that current screening does not expire before screening is renewed.
