Amy Levai Aboriginal teaching scholarships

The department is committed to increasing the number of Aboriginal teachers in public education in South Australia. 

The Amy Levai Aboriginal teaching scholarships provide financial support and pathways to employment for Aboriginal students interested in teaching.

Scholarships available:
•    $10,000 Amy Levai Aboriginal teaching scholarship – secondary school students
•    $20,000 Amy Levai Aboriginal teaching scholarship – pre-service teacher education students.

Verification of Aboriginality

Candidates must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and provide verification via a document with a common seal issued by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisation. Organisations that may be able to help with certification include:

$10,000 Amy Levai Aboriginal teaching scholarship – secondary school students

Eligibility

Candidates must:

  • be senior secondary school students (from year 11) studying in a South Australian government school
  • intend to enrol in a teacher education program pathway at an Australian university on completion of their final year of secondary education
  • receive endorsement of their application from their school principal.

Scholarship conditions and payments

  • Successful candidates enter into a contractual agreement with the department.
  • Payments are made in stages: 
    • on the completion of year 11
    • mid-final year of secondary school
    • and the completion of the final year of secondary education once enrolment into a teacher education program pathway is confirmed.
  • Payments may be subject to tax.
  • Payments can be used at the discretion of the candidate.

Application

Submit a completed Amy Levai Aboriginal Teaching Scholarship – secondary application (Word 73KB) to decdstrategicrecruitment [at] sa.gov.au.

Final year students must submit their application by the end of term 3 of the final year of secondary school.

Following receipt of the completed  application a meeting will be arranged with the applicant, key people at the applicant’s school, and a  parent/s or legal guardian/s.

$20,000 Amy Levai Aboriginal teaching scholarship – pre-service students

Eligibility

Candidates must:

  • be currently studying in a teacher education program pathway (eg Bachelor of Education or combined undergraduate specialist degree/postgraduate Master of Teaching) at any Australian tertiary institution or have applied to commence in the following year
  • reside in South Australia for the duration of study.

DECD employees

Candidates who are current employees of the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) may also be eligible for a tailored support package.

Scholarship conditions and payments

Successful candidates enter into a contractual agreement with the department.

Payments are made on a semester basis on submission of successful results. Payments may be subject to tax and used at the discretion of the candidate. Scholarship payments made to department employees will be made through payroll services and will be taxable as ordinary salary and wages.

Students applying for the scholarship in their final year of study must submit an application by 31 May of that year.
